Winter Skin Care

Happy January!  Mamma hopes that you are enjoying the simple pleasures of winter.  As we find ourselves spending more time indoors in artificially heated environments,   Mamma wants you to keep these simple steps in mind for healthy skin care during the dry winter months...

1. Hook up the humidifier--central heating systems blast hot dry air, while humidifiers replenish moisture into the air. Humidifiers can help to prevent your skin from drying out. Experts recommend keeping the humidity level in your home between 30-50%.

2. Ban superhot baths and showers---the intense heat actually breaks down the lipid barriers in the skin, which can lead to a loss of moisture.  You are better off with just warm water and staying in the bath or shower a shorter amount of time (like 10 minutes).  Immediately after bathing, and while your skin is still damp is the ideal time to moisturize in the winter, which leads to tip #3….

3. Moisturize more!  Moisturizing routines that work fine in the spring and summer are probably not going to be as effective in the cold, dry winter months.  A heavier, or oil based, rather than water based moisturizer will create a protective layer on the skin that retains more moisture.  Mamma likes to use her bath oil in the winter and then slather her lotion on top of that---layering isn't just for clothing!  Mamma likes this seque into step #4...

4.  Use soft sheets and sleepwear, they are soothing to sensitive, dry skin.  Avoid blends of cotton and synthetic fibers if possible, they can be irritating to dry or sensitive skin.

5.  You still need a good sunscreen if you are outside for extended periods of time….the glare of the sun, particularly off of snow, can be doubly dangerous.

6.  And finally, keep yourself healthy to nourish healthy skin, too.  Drink plenty of water, maintain a healthy diet including fruits and vegetables, exercise regularly, and allow for 6-8 hours of sleep each night.

Remember, Mamma wants you to feel good and take good care of yourself!
